Centre of Media
Over the past two years, the board and staff at the grunt gallery have been planning renovations to the space that would allow for the inclusion of a media centre. We are please to announce that in addition to the $20,000 in secured support from the municipality grunt’s application to Cultural Spaces Canada for $25,000 was 100% successful. This puts the project well on its way; the next steps in the process and the full scope of the project will be announced at our upcoming winter solstice celebration December 21, 2009. See you there!
Tania Willard appointed grunt gallery Resident Curator
Grunt gallery welcomes Tania Willard as Resident Curator from August 2009 – August 2010. This residency is supported by the Canada Council for the Arts Assistance to Aboriginal Curators for Residencies in Visual Arts program.
During her residency Willard (pictured on the right speaking with artist Nathalie Ball) will be working on several projects. Initially she will focus on completing the exhibition and dissemination of Beat Nation and the editing of brunt issue 5. In the coming year she will be coordinating an exhibition of the work of Nicholas Galanin and developing an exhibition showcasing the work of emerging Northern artists. A primary theme running through these projects is the transformation and resurgence of cultural knowledge and values through new forms and media, whether it be hip hop, film and video, or web-based media. These projects will involve travel-based research investigating the contexts in which the next generation of emerging and young Inuit and Northern artists live and work.
