The Archive Show

Archive Show Update

grunt staff are currently working to set up the archival systems that are part of the current exhibition “Activating the archive”. So far we have a giant tower, built by Davide Pan, containing all our archival materials; our Filemaker Pro Database is warmed up and ready to receive data; and Bobbi Kozinuk is putting the finishing touches on a video review and dubbing station for all the Hi 8 tapes from thew 80s.

Currently we are looking for volunteers to help us with different aspects of this project. Between now and the end of August 2010. Over the next month, we’ll be working on the following things:

1. Numbering and filing exhibition records.
2. Previewing and Numbering videos in the collection so they can be found with their associated  exhibition materials.
3. Begin the process of digitally capturing image and video material currently on analog formats (and hopefully finding some gems to blog about). This material will also be used for building online archival tools as part of the Media Lab Initiative.

If you are interested in volunteering at the grunt, now is a great time to come by for a visit; the tasks we are working on will range from data entry and fidgety organizing to working on a mind map of the archive that will grow and become part of the current exhibition. Give us a call or sign-up for our volunteer email for more info.

Tania Willard, curator of "Oblique Drift", was just down in New Mexico with artist Nicholas Galanin at the launch of his most recent exhibition.

Yuxweluptun book launch

Media Centre Update

Malcolm Levy is continuing with the development of the grunt Media Centre. This renovation project will convert the current kitchen area into a Media Exhibition space. The preliminary drawings have been prepared and efforts are being directed at the work necessary to undergo the renovation and identifying some of the potential programming that this project will support and foster.

Brunt 5 Launched!

Brunt 5, edited by Tania Willard, features essays about each exhibition and performance grunt coordinated last year.Issue 5 of brunt magazine on and offline is brought to you by the great artists who exhibited at grunt gallery this past season, all of the staff, volunteers, board, membership and funders who all make it possible for grunt to present the artists you see in brunt magazine.

brunt magazine is about showcasing these artists, the work that they have poured themselves into, the concepts they are exploring and the ideas they are conjuring. Support for the Arts and artists is under threat, many artist run centres, projects and artists themselves are worried that BC is becoming culturally bankrupt, despite the many opportunities and economic benefits of the Arts, support is shrinking.
